Taken literally it seems a very difficult thing, to view the world through a one inch picture frame. It was an exercise one of my writing mentors/professors would have us do in class fairly often. (It’s from Ann Lamott‘s book on writing entitled Bird by Bird.) It always makes more sense to me after I force myself to write something, keeping that idea in mind. To take one tiny aspect of my life-one moment, one experience, one revelation- helps to put things into perspective. And in tough times, a bearable perspective. A less depressing point of view. The here-and-now seems so eternal when it’s uncomfortable. But when I really stop to think about it, and view it through a one inch picture frame, I see that what I’m going through at that particular moment in my life is merely part of the minutiae that comprises my entire existence, and sooner than I realize, it is over.

I guess the point of the one inch picture frame, for me anyway because I’m sure it is different for everyone, is to not stress over the petty things that make life difficult. But to try and enjoy the little things that make life worthwhile.

And never stop writing.
